FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Bellevue, WA, May 8, 2006 - The LINMO (linked information modules) project web site (http://www.bellevuelinux.org/linmo/linmo.html) was officially launched today by Bellevue Linux Users Group (BELUG). LINMO is a simple model that describes the organization of information for primarily textual web sites that maximize their usefulness and convenience for the largest possible audience, including people with varying levels of knowledge about the topic. Web sites that conform to this model can help move the Internet closer to its true potential as a high quality information and educational resource. The model is based on the concept of optimal modularization and combining the best attributes of well-written hard copy books and the numerous advantages that the web can offer over traditional printed media. Improvements in modularization have long been fundamental to advances in product performance and lower costs and ultimately to the growth and prosperity of industrial economies. LINMO-compatible web sites can be developed by skilled writers possessing only the most basic of computer skills by following a set of relatively simple and intuitive guidelines. Some of these guidelines are already included in the LINMO site; additional categories will be added in the coming months. Pages will also be added that further describe the model and the implications (e.g., for the web, for conventional book publishing and for education) of its widespread implementation. This project has been launched in response to the success of The Linux Information Project (LINFO), the first large-scale web site that (almost) conforms to the model. The large (and still growing) number of hits and feedback from visitors from around the world has indicated that there is a strong potential demand for web sites of this type. It was also launched in reaction to the growing proliferation of "junk content" on the web. LINMO is an acronym for "linked information modules." It can also stand for "the LINFO web content development model." Established in February 2004, the Bellevue, Washington-based Bellevue Linux Users Group serves the greater Seattle metropolitan area and is one of the leading Linux user groups in the Pacific Northwest. BELUG is best known for its role as the developer of The Linux Information Project.
